Riverwoods

This mid-century home needed a transformation to fit the active lifestyle of the new owners and their children. The design direction was to create a light-filled space that integrates with the wooded landscape. Program requirements included a total renovation, new master suite, and a 700 sf addition for flexible use.

Our design opens the living space with the family room at the center of the floor plan. A sculptural double-sided fireplace between living and family rooms has stacked-tile, a steel-plate surround, and porcelain slab hearth on three sides to unify the space. Integrated storage keeps logs ready for fires.

The master bedroom has a sleeping zone and sitting area separated by a double-sided fireplace clad in oak and steel with integrated shelving. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the wooded property.

A one-and-a-half story addition, integrated into the existing architecture, is flexible space that will evolve with the growing family. Presently it is a playroom, designed for craft projects, imaginative play, and movie nights. Because the house has no basement, the addition also includes a bathroom designed as a storm shelter. Interior furnishings were curated by Liz Pasquinelli of Debaun studio.
