Safford Avenue provides a critical linkage for the Pinellas Trail as it enters into the city and continues south to St. Petersburg. The Trail, created along an abandoned railroad corridor, provides a unique, protected greenspace for walking, jogging, skating, and biking. David Conner + Associates was hired by the City of Tarpon Springs to improve the aesthetic appearance and pedestrian experience for the section of the Trail between Tarpon Springs Avenue and Live Oak Boulevard.
DCA’s design for the project included completion of adjacent sidewalks on the east and west sides of the street to provide for optional pedestrian circulation combined with the narrowing of the road to provide for increased planting area along the trail median. The final project transforms the trail as it passes through the city into a beautiful landscape experience that safely protects pedestrians from vehicular traffic.
