56th Street

In 2001 the city of Temple Terrace approved a long-range redevelopment plan intended for the purpose of transforming their suburban retail into a new mixed-use urban center. The plan envisioned a series of redevelopment efforts that would encourage the development of new urban housing, retail, office and public facilities. A major impediment to the success of the plan was the unattractive and heavily used state highway that separated the redevelopment areas and discouraged pedestrian connections within the community.

In 2007 the city selected David Conner + Associates to develop a new design for 56th Street. The firm recognized that the street should become part of the redevelopment and not just a decorative thoroughfare. The final design meets this objective by providing greater access to public transit through four new shelters designed to reflect the identity of the community, a new gateway tower and shade structures signaling arrival and identity for the community, widened architectural paver sidewalks, coordinated street and pedestrian lighting and forty 30 foot tall Medjool Date palms placed on both sides of the street serving as a natural transition between the street and the development.

David Conner + Associates was the prime consultant for the project coordinating the efforts of the entire engineering team. In addition to streetscape and pedestrian improvements the project included road resurfacing, utility relocation (underground), and new traffic signals. The project funding was coordinated through the Florida Department of Transportation Local Area Participation (LAP) program. Located on the state road system the project was reviewed and certified by FDOT.
