Richard Griswold - Staff & Instructor

Richard Griswold, Associate Provost and Dean of Students at the Boston Architectural College, holds a Master in Architecture from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design where he received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal.  His BA is from Bennington College.

Formerly the Director of Foundation Studies, Rich was responsible for supervising beginning design courses in the BAC's concurrent program.  He has taught design studios, visual studies courses, historic preservation and history/theory workshops, and has also been a thesis advisor and lead lecturer for the BAC's Summer Academy high school program.  His lecture course, Design Principles, has been a threshold into design thinking for all BAC undergraduates.  In spring 2006, Rich presented a paper entitled Intersections at the Beginning: the Choreography of Learners at a Practice-Based Design School at the Beginning Design Conference at the University of Iowa.  In spring 2008, he taught "BAC-FH20", a course focused on Frank Lloyd Wright's life, work, and creative process, which included a five-day stay at Fallingwater.  This led to 'Historic Houses as Learning Laboratories', a presentation at the 2008 Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy conference with Cara Armstrong, Curator of Education at Fallingwater.  Rich directs the BAC's summer travel program with Jovi Cruces, Senior Associate at Dimella Shaffer Associates.  The summer 2013 program will be based in Rome.  In previous years they have explore Paris, Florence, and Madrid.

Since 1996 Rich has worked as a part-time design consultant for Elliott Associates Architects in Belmont, Massachusetts.  In the winters of 2008/2009 and 2010/2011, Rich was a MacDowell Colony Fellow in Architecture.  He also received the Ed Toomey Award for Student Advocacy for his "progressive vision for the school and his commitment to both teaching and student development".

Alongside this work, often as an antidote to it, Rich is an artist, exploring drawing, watercolor painting, and their possible intersections with designed space.
