For the first time, that at least I can remember or have known, the University of Miami School of Architecture held its Upper Level Reviews and Graduate Thesis Reviews off campus to the Miami Design District. Occupying the historic Moore Building, reviews were spread out over a two day period which was made possible by the area's developer, Craig Robbins of Dacra.

The Graduate Students in Architecture and those in the school's Real Estate program used the space on Day 1, holding two reviews at a time in the grand lobby space of the building. Some of the topics that stood out were:

Day 2 consisted of the Upper Level Studios, where undergraduates in their 4th and 5th year of study, as well as 2nd year graduate students, are able to pick and choose their studio based upon interest. Some studios had topics that were held aboard such as "Vernacularology II" by Prof. Adib Cure. This studio traveled to Barranquilla, Colombia to study the informal city of "Las Flores". Students were asked to come up with a projects derived from on site research that would be of benefit to the neighborhood. Others kept things closer to home and tackled local issues such as Prof. Jacob Brillhart's studio "The Underline". The Underline is proposed 10 mile linear park that runs underneath the metrorail stations in Miami currently being master planned by James Corner Field Operations. Students in this section were looking at how the existing stations could be transformed to work in conjunction with the future park.
Once all juries wrapped up, a reception was held were Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury announced the design awards for the Core (years 1-3), Upper Level, and Thesis. It was a large turnout, with many students and visitors returning from Day 1 to take a look at the work presented and enjoy the conclusion of another successful year.

What began as an experiment following one group of incoming graduate students through their first semester of design, has morphed into a window of the school of architecture through this professor's eyes.
