This house was a small traditional brick bungalow, owned by a young couple with two children. As the family grew, the owner felt a need for a second storey and wanted to upgrade the look of the old house. The challenge of this project was to work within the existing footprint of the house, maximizing the usable space and make the space feel larger than it is. One approach was to design the ground floor with open concept to visually connect kitchen, dinner room and living room, which really made the house feel spacious. The ground floor ceiling was raised from 8' to 9'-6", supported with LVL beams spending from exterior wall to exterior wall. The entire house was re-cladded to give a new modern look, and new insulation was added to properly insulate the house.
