Urban Infill / Hostel+ Public Park

Interaction with other humans has lost its place in modern daily life. Seeking a remedy, this project is designed to bring people together across a variety of settings. Within the proposal, an urban infill which encompasses a city block in Portland, Maine, are a restaurant, cafe, bar, club, local artisan workshops, numerous shops, a band shell and a hostel. These program elements are all destination points to a wide range of people, whether young or old, businessman or student, local or visitor.

The hostel will serve the numerous tourists who visit the city each year, as well as catering to the local music tradition by providing affordable accommodation for concert-goers. Within the hostel all amenities and functional spaces are shared, increasing the opportunities to meet and interact with new people. The project serves to remind us that contact with other humans is vital, and this consideration needs to be re-incorporated back into the design process.
