The neighborhood of Elephant and Castle is the main entry point to the city from south of the river, and thus has the dubious honor of having rapidly rising land and housing values, while being dominated by vehicular traffic. One particular area, and old social housing estate, had been of heightened interest by developers looking to capitalize on the location’s value and proximity to the City. Redevelopment proposals, looking to ‘regenerate and upgrade’ a borough up until now looked upon as being poor and derelict, came in from all sectors. Unfortunately for the current residents of the neighborhood, these regeneration plans do not include them.
Our alternative proposal for the Elephant and Castle upgrading scheme looks not only at ways to integrate all groups into the process, but also how to continue to use and benefit from all spaces within the diverse area across all phases of time, with a particular emphasis on small initiatives that were already underway by locals, and the temporal and liminal aspects.
