Woven Interaction

The brief for this studio was to design the extension to University High School to accommodate more students and facilitate new programs. The aim with this design is to reintegrate the school’s campus with the community by weaving it into the existing urban fabric. The form of the building was found by analysing the pattern of the weave from the existing school and the surrounding buildings and blending them the fill in the vast hole in the fabric.

University High School considers itself to be a part of the larger local community through many of its actions but this is not reflected in its physical form. The new proposal for the school calls for a greater connection with the surrounding community through the program of shared sporting facilities with Melbourne University and opportunities for shared public and private use of space in the cafe, cinema and gym spaces. This extension offers a chance to reconnect the campus with the local city fabric.
