Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Master Plan

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University Master Plan
Graduate Studio Project

With: Remington Ham and Joel Mieses (C.L. Bohannon, faculty)

To create a master plan concept for Florida A&M University, an in-depth site analysis was conducted along with thorough research into the university’s history as a land-grant agricultural college and historically black institution. Development patterns on the campus on in the surrounding urban context were also analyzed. The design was guided by several core principles, including preservation of old growth trees and adaptive reuse of architecturally and historically significant structures.

The resultant master plan incorporated new facilities for research and academic programs, while maintaining the historically significant features and cultural character of the school. Historical markers and interpretive signage were added to showcase the school’s history. The master plan concept included features designed to benefit the university financially through strategic
addition of academic programs, real estate and development properties, and community investment. Prospective actions were identified for their ability to benefit local residents, which are underserved in affordable medical care, employment opportunities, and other areas.
