Envisioning Gateway Competition

Gateway National Recreation Area is made up of systems in tension:
Culture versus nature.
Human versus animal.
Glacial versus geologic.
Ocean versus land.
Our goal is not to relieve these tensions. Instead we harness the energy latent in each condition and use it to create a more dynamic, engaging, and ecologically robust Gateway. Drawing on the powerful metaphor of the ecotone, we explore, exploit, erase, and redraw the physical, geographic, and mental boundaries and barriers that form Gateway. Blurring the lines that separate research, recreation, and education, we create a holistic program for both local visitors and ecotourists from around the world.
