The Ward Farm Recreation and Nature park is located on 10455 E Ward Road in Calvert County, Maryland. The park has over 6.3 miles of paths suitable for walking and biking and is therefore a popular destination for both those in and around Calvert County as well as school groups interested in learning about the natural landscape of southern Maryland. The client desired a pavilion with cover to be placed on a clear pathway overlooking an open field of wildflowers, fishing pier and pond. The observation deck of the pavilion bleeds into the existing steep slope of the path, allowing visitors to walk from the path onto the pavilion without interruption. The deck is constructed of natural wood planking and the building frame is constructed of board formed concrete. A storage area is inconspicuously bermed into the hillside beneath the deck and the covered area below provides an outdoor classroom as well as temporary refuge from inclement weather. Wire mesh guardrails are intended to disappear into the landscape and the angular shape of the concrete structure propels a visitor on the observation deck into the landscape beyond.
