St. Joseph Hospital needed a comprehensive medical office building and cancer center that allowed patients to meet their needs in one facility with centralized services, while providing a comforting place for healing and care. Key design elements included bringing in natural light to aid the healing process, as well as providing warm, comforting finishes. A sweeping glass curtain-wall system that wraps around three sides of the building provides views and natural daylighting throughout the building.
The Cancer Center’s second floor incorporates several patient-generated design suggestions regarding the infusion, chemotherapy, and apheresis bays. The bays each feature their own centralized nurse station, with outdoor terraces giving almost every bay a view. Each private bay was designed with a sliding shoji screen to allow patients as open or private an experience as they desire. A below-grade garden provides a verdant view to all three floors. The new medical office building houses medical office space within seven levels.
Program: The OSHPD 3 Cancer Center features spaces for radiation oncology, imaging, an infusion center, a comprehensive breast center, a pharmacy, a clinical laboratory, an appearance center, an education and resource library, a cafe, a conference space, and cancer administrative services. The Medical Office Building includes exam rooms and physician offices.
