At almost the instant when humans started building cities, we figured out ways to put walls around them. The often violent history behind those walls is still affecting urban life today, in ways we may not realize.
Most of the cities have built massive walls for defensive purposes, either way; it seems that the city wall began as a way to separate “us” from “them” socially. The population exploded, and natural disaster is also the pressing issues, the city wall becomes a controversial wall. So what is the city wall should be?
Using District 2 Ho Chi Minh City is as the site to testing the idea of the innovation in the city wall.
This project is using District 2 in Ho Chi Minh City as the site testing idea of the innovation of city wall which designs the new cross programmed infrastructure, urban and architecture typologies. Base on the District 2 master plan of Sasaki Associates and the low lying of site condition which make the city always flooding.
This urban circulation superstructure is the result of connecting with 6 substantial portions along the water edge including Garden Park, Cultural Museum, Theatre, Central Plaza, Sports Area, and Wetland Park to create the continuous urban movement which wraps along the river coast parkland and it is considered one of the most Highline programs development design high-density leisure which accommodates housing and recreational and commercial components.
The aim of the project provides a precious element of urban composition in Ho Chi Minh City by maintaining city diversity such as tube houses, hem (alleys) and Indochinese Architecture.
This massive wall had created a series of urban design and architecture buildings, and each of these displays its own logic and independence by using the rules of transformation to create a matrix that works to organise the park and act as reference points to visitors within this city wall.
