Cowles House, Lewis Walpole Library, Yale University

The Major General Solomon Cowles House is one of two historic homes on the grounds of the Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington, Connecticut. The home was constructed between 1782 and 1784 and is located in the Farmington Local Historic District and listed on the National Register District. During the mid-twentieth century, under the ownership of the Lewis family, the house evolved from a private single family residence to an academic center for scholarship related to Horace Walpole. The building was expanded on numerous occasions in relation to the growth of the collections. One notable addition was the work of architects Delano and Aldrich. Our work for the Cowles House included a detailed Condition Assessment Study for the eighteenth through twentieth century building areas and ensuing restoration of the building envelope (roof, chimneys, windows, walls, porch, porch structure).
