Most Lowe’s retail stores are site adapt projects. The project management challenge is to protect the integrity of the brand while conforming to local codes, covenants and aesthetic preferences. As a project architect for Lowe’s accounts at CSO Architects of Indianapolis, Indiana, and BRR Architects of Merriam, Kansas, I completed more than 60 stores in at least 20 states. Configuration of each store was dictated by the racking plan identified by Lowe’s corporate merchandising group. As project architect, I was responsible for presenting each store plan to local building officials, making required modifications, obtaining permits, and assuring quality during construction, move-in and opening.
