Los Angeles, CA
Miami is known for its beach and surf culture. Miami Barrel celebrates this perspective and creates a clear formal language that draws from a wave as it is about to break. It symbolizes the ‘perfect wave’ all surfers search for. Miami Barrel introduces an invigorating concept to revive and refresh the shoreline. The concept will attract surfers from around the globe to ride the specialized and controlled wave park. The first thing tourists notice as they approach from the cruise ships is this seemingly constant barreling structure. In addition to bringing the young and vibrant surf subculture to the park; the amphitheatres, restaurants, and 360 degree roof deck will attract visitors of all ages to interact with the city and the its natural environment in a very new way. The amphitheatre will absorb a variety of performances attracting a diverse and eclectic mix of patrons of all ages, year round. The restaurants and roof deck will provide a sustainable economical model to maintain public programming around the site. Besides creating a distinct emblem for Miami, Miami Barrel integrates sustainable technologies such as a nanofiltration membrane for rainwater filtration and piezoelectric electric sensors on the softscape amphitheatre terraces that harness energy to operate the wave park. Miami Barrel aspires to define Miami as the surf and culture capital of the world.
