I’m a residential designer who is focused on creating living environments that create comfort, function and beauty for the home owner or renter whether its incorporating the green initiatives of a Co-housing community or framing a magical river view from a stair landing.
I believe in the transformative power of the built environment to change a single life or a community’s direction. Even with all the deadlines, construction and budgetary restrictions, I can’t imagine devoting myself to anything more fun or satisfying.
I am looking for a full time, part time or freelance position in a work environment with a group of inspired designers and architects that I can exchange knowledge and and share ideas with.
DOMAIN DESIGNS, Arlington NY & Raleigh NC, Owner
While under contract to Bald Head Island I designed and drew energy efficient mixed-use, single family and multi-family luxury homes working in close collaboration with their in-house Planning and Construction Department to achieve exacting execution. I also initiated design revisions for BHI’s new Ferry Terminal that was well into development but not meeting the owner’s expectations when I was asked to get involved. I coordinated closely with the Architect of Record to assure the design integrity of our alterations.
At City Council’s urging I was hired as a “Design Doctor” on three infill projects in downtown Raleigh - two town home communities and one block square apartment complex –which were meeting with community disapproval. By listening closely to the neighborhood’s concerns and making adjustments to pedestrian orientation, scale and design details I then prepared and presented illustrations that secured a positive approval from the neighborhood associations and City Council.
As sole proprietor of Domain Designs I designed, drew and field coordinated new homes, renovations and additions for large to small homes. I fined tuned my client’s homes to their tastes, living patterns and needs whether it was building in a toy garage below a staircase, or providing a built in bookcase in a water closet for an avid reader.
Working with a sustainable developer I designed two modular homes. I met the challenge of learning from and working with two different local modular manufacturers that were not geared for the custom design market. I closely collaborated with their drafting departments to guide and guarantee an accurate interpretation of the original vision.

J DAVIS & ASSOCIATES, Raleigh, Nc, Senior Designer
I worked with Jeff Davis, a small team and landowners on a groundbreaking Cohousing neighborhood called Eno Commons, a collection of 22 small homes oriented around a wild life corridor. The homes used 60% of the energy of a typical house and twelve years later it is still the most energy efficient neighborhood in North Carolina. We applied universal design principles for accessibility to create an age-in-place, non-exclusive community. It was featured in April 1999’s Fine Home Building Magazine and received a Duke Energy award.
The Design Director and I collaborated to create five homes for Governor’s Village, a large neo-traditional neighborhood in Chapel Hill.
The presentation boards that I designed and drew were credited by the marketing team for selling almost all of the lots the first weekend of sales.
I was responsible for the Site Plan, SD’s, DD’s and PM for a 260 unit apartment complex that included clubhouse and recreational structures in Charleston SC. The apartments reflected the traditional Charleston vernacular and were organized around formal common courtyards that showcased the beauty of the heritage live oaks.
I was responsible for designing and preparing the building guidelines booklet and Pattern Book for a new coastal neo-traditional community that was site designed by Duany Plater- Zybert & Company.
William McDonough + Partners, Charlottesville, VA, Lead Designer
At WM+P, as a Freelance designer I was assigned with the challenge of distilling a 20,000 square foot home down to 7000 square feet while maintaining the elegance and formal essence of the original design and program. I was also entrusted with preparing all the final presentation drawings that illustrated the revised concept for the HURON HOUSE

BEST IN LIVING AWARD, Award
For the Carriages at Allyn's Landing in Raleigh NC that I designed the exterior because the plans were already designed from an earlier project the developer built. It was a standard "snout" condominium development with the garages prominent. I was inspired by the beautiful carriage houses of the Hudson Valley and by using the walls of the garages to create entrance court yards it activated the street and encouraged community between neighbors. The award was published in their magazine and I believe the year was 2002.
Best New Graduate Student, Other
My first graduate program was at Miami University. When I received the BEST NEW GRADUATE STUDENT award in an end of year ceremony it was the final symbol among others that told me I wasn't in the right place or program. I knew if I wasn't surround by students that were better than me, that I could learn from, then I wouldn't grow as a designer and potential architect. So I took the year off and search for another program. I ended up at NC State University where I was surrounded by excellent students and instructors.
