Hybrid in Belém

Located in Lisbon, Belém, this project was implemented in place of a parking lot that lies east of the National Cordage factory, composing the front of the block.

It is proposed a new front for the block, which meets the needs of the area surrounding the project and Lisbon, adding on the proposal, a new solution for the connection of the city with the river.

Having the Avenue of India and the railway as physical barriers located on the South, making the delimitation of the intervention area and breaking the link with the river, comes the opportunity to create two levels of intimacy. Resorting to patios at the level of the street, it is possible to generate attractive spaces that turn to the inside of the block, gaining a more introverted character. On the upper floors, taking advantage of the high elevation that is generated by the remains of the wall of the old fort of “Estrela”, it creates an extension of this and generates a garden plan, which makes possible a visual and physical connection to the riverfront.

Through analysis of the surrounding area, the project was defined according to the blocks and the existing roads, thereby providing a better integration of the project with the pre-existing, generating lines that defined the size and shape of public and private spaces.

The project emerged as a way to respond to a set program, but is also seen as a solution for connecting the city of Lisbon with the riverfront.
