The display and organisation of books on a shelf

This is my most active pile at the moment:

The spine-in thing is just to give my room a little less clutter when I'm concentrating -I do actually know which book is which. I should really stack them properly but I'm mid-research so I'm lucky if I remember to eat at the moment. And yes - I am rocking a lava lamp. I am that cool.

I'm pretty sure the photo I posted is just a vinyl on a garage door.  And that KL library?  That's just a mess.

Chris, the light in your space looks very nice.

DEWEY DECIMAL!

If you're serious about you books both as individual objects and as a living resource then Dewey Decimal is the only way to go.  It takes a while to get this system up and running I'll grant you that but once your done you will thank me.  For years I had all my books organized alphabetically by author but once my collection grew it became to hard to navigate.

Dewey Decimal is a knowledge area based system dividing all information into ten sections and then subdividing into smaller and more specific areas.  I'm sure most of you have encounter the dewey decimal at some point in your life, it is really a great system.

I currently have 912 books, all in dewey decimal order and it is easy to find things. Architecture books reside in the 720's; 720-729.99.  All books on architecture history are grouped together, all books about any particular architect are grouped together, building topologies are grouped together.  Using the dewey system turns your book collection into a functioning library and a true resource, I could not recommend it more.

I use/used librarything to catalog and search my collection, also a great resource that I highly recommend

I too use the the Ikea Expedit system, I have one 5x5 flanked by two 2x5 (custom pieces i made myself.  My next move will be to get another 5x5 and place the two 5x5's next to one another and then place the two 2x5's horizontally on top, making a 7x5 wall.

Having worked at the library for all but three semesters of my college life I find this thread very interesting. Personally, my books are all messed up. They are somewhat arranged by genre and then size but on three different shelves throughout my apartment so it gets interesting when I want to find one. If I had enough room to put them all in one place I'd probably go with the Library of Congress classification system just because it's what I'm familiar with. Slightly off topic but I've been wondering this for awhile, does anyone else find themselves looking at the books on the shelves in your design and architecture magazines? In other words, do you find yourself flipping through Dwell and finding an image that has some books on a shelf only to stop, pull out a magnifying glass if necessary to see what books the photographer staged on the shelf? Anyone? Or is it just me?
