Mugal Museum in Agra 2017

As part of the „Sustainable Tourism Development Plan of Agra“, which aims to extend the stay of the tourists in Agra - as most of them come only to take pictures at the Taj Mahal while overlooking the other mugal buildings of Agra - it was decided to build a museum for the mughal heritage of Agra at the road connecting the highway and the Taj Mahal.

Besides to the demographic situation of Agra; the exeptional monumentality, combination of styles from different cultures, and incredible craftmansship of the mugal buildings were the anchors of the architectural concept.

One of the main tasks of museums is to be the stage and screen for the exibition. But as museums are also places of research, eduction and culture many different people come together which leads to a huge potential in interaction and communication in the space in front of the museum as well as inside.

A museum like this, which purpose is being a magnet for tourists, needs to adress the relation between habitants and tourists as it is a huge topic in a city like Agra.

The intention is not to strenghten the connenction of highway and Taj Mahal, more to be a sensible irritate it to stop people from rushing through.

As the public in India is very vivid a building which is a magnet for tourists will automatically become a magnet for street vendors. To regulate the situation one can either build a wall around the museum or give the sitation enough informal space to regulate itself and allow the cultural exchange between habitants and foreigners.

In contrast to the mugal buildings the inside function shall be seen from the outside to express the contend-based function. The rooms are -referencing the structure of agra- added cuboids, reduced to form and atmosphere, allowing free and self-reliant movement around the courtyards. Pure materials form a clear room as a sensual background for the exibition. The facade is closed to strenghten the museums introverted character and concentration, ceiling light illuminate the rooms.

Each room is constructed out of 74 cm thick brickwalls, to support the indoor climate and stress the handcrafted component. Moreover brick building is deeply rooted in indian building culture.
