Extension of a school, 2016, 2nd Prize

the project was part of a students competition as base for a competition from the city of Heidelberg.

The interdenominational school for children aged from 6 to 17 is situated in a suburban area of Heidelberg, a city in southern Germany. The city district is growing north which shifts the geographical center near to where the school is located.

The existing school consists of six red-brick buildings in row construction and needs new flexible space for individual teaching methods and interactive ways of learning.

To respect the existing context, the project suggests to dock new learning houses on the north side of each of the brick houses. In contrast to them the new facade is made out of industrial glass and a steel framework so it allows a spacious room, divided into zones by different platforms and mobile curtains. As a result a large variety of different spaces with different qualities are connected to each other to offer a learning space as flexible as possible: students can learn in groups of different sizes, sitting or moving around, holding speeches or concentrate in more quiet corners, depending on tasks and individual learning abilities. By time the usage of the existing classrooms will shift from rooms for frontal orientated teaching to places of individual input, of retreat and concentrated learning.

Classrooms for physics, biology, art, household lessons and computer studies will be in an existing three storey building, shared with the neighborhood along with independent youth facilities. The new gym and venue is orientated to an urban plaza where school and the public meet and create a new vibrant center.
