The brief was to create a bright and generous study space in the clients’ triangular rear yard retaining a small external space.

The proposal respects the garden's original shape by positioning a triangular super-insulated timber structure along the existing walls. The Triangle distances itself from the rear facade of the house through a generous glazed strip, generating an elongated glass skylight in order to bring in natural light to both the Triangle and the rear rooms of the house. The sharpest angle of the triangular garden is turned into a small patio with a built-in seating bench. A wedge shaped skylight is designed where the patio meets the Triangle, playing with the perception of inside/outside through materiality.

The choice of materials accentuates the form and design concept. The Triangle is treated as a clean, separate volume and every surface – walls, floor and ceiling – is clad in high quality birch plywood. The floors and ceilings outside the Triangle’s footprint are finished with a dark-stained decking and glass skylights respectively, contrasting the pale coloured plywood and drawing clear separation lines.

The result is a bright, spacious study and a modern addition to a traditional property that celebrates the uniqueness of its shape and provides an interesting and enjoyable space.

The couple’s en-suite bathroom was also redesigned, with the original chimney providing the line for a symmetrical his/hers basin area. Pastel colours were combined with a warm grey polished plaster, pattern tiles and concrete basins to create an atmosphere of calmness and serenity.
