Beyond the Obscura

Beyond the obscura is an adaptive reuse project aimed to save the gradually disappearing library: the Atlanta Central Libray by Marcel Breuer. How can an architecture from past time be preserved and remembered by people and keep its life reborn in the future? The proposal raised and tries to answer the question above. During the process of design, I embeded the idea of camera obscura into the building and used different kind of material to reflect this idea. In the camera obscura of my own version, the hole represent "present", the dark room represent "past, while the exterior world represent "future". In order to represent the moments of past, present and future, I decided to apply different material on the staircases on each floor. When people are going downwards, the material would become older and heavier, which represent the past moment. When people are stay on a horizontal axis, they are experiencing present moments. Finally, when people are going upwards, the material of staircase become newer and lighter, they are embracing the future.
