Located in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, a rapidly growing tech hub, Data 1 is leading the way for the next evolution of sustainable commercial office design. The LEED Gold and Salmon-Safe Certified building has 114,000sq.ft. of commercial office space that promotes a productive and healthy work environment with plenty of fresh air and natural daylighting. At its base, 12,000 sq.ft. of retail space supports local businesses and invigorates the pedestrian experience.

Its cohesive design achieves a unique combo of an abundance of daylighting while remaining energy efficient. Data 1’s interior is naturally daylit. Vertical (glass) and horizontal (metal) shading devices are installed to reduce glare and heat gain. Energy modeling was done throughout the design phase to strategically place shades. This ensured the project reduced heat gain in the most cost effective and impactful way.

Access to the outdoors is available on every floor of Data 1. Extended balconies on the third, fourth and fifth floors at the southwest corner of the building provide additional shade, and also act as an extension from the office to outside. An exterior feature stair acts as another extension to the outdoors while also offering chance encounters for the occupants.

Inside, the exposed castellated steel beams allow sprinklers and ducts to run through them, minimizing floor-to-floor height and creating an airy, open space. Their unusual form also makes for a visually interesting ceiling plane filled with changing light and shadow patterns keeping you aware of the time of day.

On the outside, Data 1 welcomes the community. It pays special attention to the ground plane and first story, with human scaled, high quality materials.  It offers transparency at the public realm with the southwest corner “lantern” element faces the bustling Fremont neighborhood to the west.

Along the east edge of the project site, the Aurora Bridge empties stormwater runoff directly onto Troll Avenue and N 34th Street. This water typically flows downhill into dedicated storm drains that discharge into Lake Union without ever being treated. DATA 1's unique landscape redirects this runoff into a series of bioretention cells running alongside the building. These planters are densely planted with vegetation that naturally scrubs stormwater, allowing dissolved pollutants to settle before the water – much cleaner than before – is diverted back into Lake Union. Additional stormwater management features include a green roof, which helps naturally mitigate on-site stormwater and reduce runoff.
