Climb so iLL is located in St.Louis’ City Hospital development, just north of the Georgian Condominium Complex in the historic City Hospital Power Plant building. Removal of the power-generating machinery within revealed 50’ high spaces, massive windows, and the patina of the weathered steel, exposed brick and concrete. These raw elements are preserved, and the climbing walls, proshop, office, and galleries nested in the space are architecturally minimal insertions that simultaneously contrast and expose the historical interior. Part of the ground level of the building will be removed to accommodate the tallest wall and allow for a wide spectator stair to extend from the ground floor to the lower level. Restaurants above the gym will look onto it in unconventional ways.
