The Bio-Science Complex at the University of Connecticut represents a new era of collaborative research for its College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. It is one of an elite group of facilities nationally for combined research and technology transfer.
The Complex is comprised of three buildings - the Advanced Technology Laboratory and the Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory and attached Greenhouse.
The laboratories provide research environments for plant and animal biochemistry and bioengineering as well as "incubator" labs for new companies. Every element - from laboratories filled with natural light to stairwells placed on the building exteriors - was designed with the idea of nurturing a collaborative environment.
Their design is both efficient and flexible for evolving research needs and technological development. Paramount are the "people" spaces designed to nurture interaction between faculty, research staff and students in both formal and casual settings. Small conference rooms, break rooms and kitchen areas combine with office suites to create a community for research groups assembled from different parts of the University.
Growing out of a campus feasibility study, the siting of the building reinforces an edge of the campus acting as a front door and gateway while in turn defining two new campus open spaces for the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources: A new inner courtyard and a new quadrangle which was formerly a parking lot. Existing pathways were strengthened and new ones created to knit the new buildings into the existing fabric of the University.
