The Goodwin College Early Childhood Magnet School accommodates a total of 240 pre-kindergarten and kindergarten aged children. The school philosophy is based on the Reggio Emilia model for early childhood education, the building incorporates design elements that embrace that philosophy.
The landscape of the site includes organic elements as suggested by the Reggio Emilia philosophy which states that the building should be "an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere highlighting the beauty of the natural world". In order to capitalize on this relationship to nature, the structure is embraced both externally and internally by natural features including the earth and native landscaping. ‘Green’ materials will are utilized throughout the facility and natural play areas are incorporated into the exterior landscape.
The floor plan of the building is organized around the main gathering space known as the Atelier. There are four academic pods each containing four classrooms, a central gross motors room and two shared service areas. These pods are accessed from the Atelier. The gross motors rooms will be used for gym functions as well as for music class which is based on the Music Together model.
The heart of the building also provides access to the administrative functions of the main office, guidance and nurse’s suite, as well as the art lab, media center and family and teacher resource center. There are two entrances into the building; one for parents and visitors, and one for buses. The main administration area is adjacent of the parent entrance yet has a clear visual connection to the bus drop lobby. An additional programmatic element is the kitchen, which is found off of the corridor next to the service entrance.
