The new headquarters of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Bhubaneswar, designed by Studio Lotus, is a reflection of Odisha’s vibrant cultural heritage and the party's commitment to inclusivity and regional development. The design, which emphasizes a strong connection with the public, integrates local traditions and crafts to embody the party's values.
Rather than the original brief for a five-storey building, the architects opted for a more modest three-storey structure. This decision preserves the building’s relationship with the street and community while minimizing unnecessary construction. The elevated ground floor serves as a plinth for public events, creating an open, transparent space that fosters interaction with the public. The ground level also includes a cafeteria, library, and a 360° audio-visual gallery. A double-height auditorium on the upper floors serves as a venue for both official functions and cultural performances, showcasing Odisha's rich artistic traditions.
The upper levels feature open office spaces designed to encourage collaboration, with the first floor housing general workspaces and the second floor dedicated to leadership areas. The building's large ribbon windows offer panoramic views of the surrounding greenery. The interior design uses locally sourced materials like terracotta, exposed concrete, and Odisha grey granite, celebrating the region's natural resources.
The building’s façade, created in collaboration with Siddhartha Das Studio, is adorned with hand-carved reliefs in laterite and terracotta, inspired by local weaving patterns and tribal art. These materials help with natural ventilation and reduce energy use. Inside, elements like Dhokra-inspired metalwork and khondalite benches support local craftsmanship.
Sustainability is a key focus, with features such as rainwater harvesting, solar panel provisions, and climate-responsive design that ensures comfort and efficiency. This headquarters is a symbol of BJD’s vision for a transparent, inclusive, and sustainable future.
