Located under the Highline on 24th st, the Lisson Gallery is a ground up project designed by studioMDA. Its unconventional location allows for a block-through building, making it a highly unique gallery in the heart of Chelsea, New York’s premier contemporary art district.
The gallery has over 4000 s.f. of exhibition space, illuminated by skylights on either side of the elevated park. 690 s.f. is dedicated to private viewing and 620 s.f. for art handling. The building will be accessible from West 24th st. for visitors and from West 25th st. for art handling.
Structural columns supporting the Highline extend into the gallery, creating a dialogue between historical and modern architecture. These same columns play with perceived scale of the space, exaggerating the enormity of the gallery. Because direct light is partially hindered by the Highline, the facade is designed to subtly reflect direct light, helping naturally light the space in front of the gallery.
With two exhibition spaces in London, one in Milan, and an office located in New York, this will be the first exhibition space in New York City for the Lisson Gallery.
