Working within a confined space and a historical neighborhood, this project tasked us with designing a row house that contained three different residential apartments. For all three units, the design was focused on creating very open and light filled spaces. For the owners apartment in particular, light flows in through a double height volume in the center of the design that has a sloped glazed roof. In the kitchen, its glass wall opens up completely to extend the living space out onto a large roof terrace. For the building’s street elevation, a brick wall extends up and hides the contemporary cladding of the owner’s apartment to maintain a historic appearance. However, the unrestricted rear elevation is designed as a contemporary evolution of the typical Back Bay row house.
