The purpose of this studio was how to mediate two types of programs, which are not normally placed together, and resolve them into one building. In this case the two programs were a contemporary art space, which Florence currently does not have an abundance of, and a monastery.
Students had to be clever about how to arrange the two programs especially when organizing circulation paths as the two different programs cannot meet.
I designed the building has two seperate halves with the ground floor permeable to the public. The two halves circulate in an upwards spiral but have small instances were some spaces protrude into another to catch glimpses of each other’s lives whether it be the art world or the religious world.
