Urban Acupuncture

A small scale but socially catalytic intervention, tailored for the particular  environment and community for which they are created and design to solve local
issues which may cause positive ripple effects.

Nested in the rigid and brutalist city fabric of Chandigarh, the CBD of sector-34 has become an abandoned ghost town because of its inability to adapt. The cube is an avant garde solution combining standardized scaffolding parts with local fabrics to renew the urban realm of the site. A generic cube made from scaffolding is pragmatically programmed to the specific site constraints and orientation through simple addition and subtraction creating vendor stalls, seating spaces, entrances, sign boards etc. The space is highlighted with a new identity, one which promotes
public participation despite retaining the existing infrastructure. The cube is an experimental intervention which renders the sub-city centre with flexibility through human scale modulor framework which is reusable, portable and iconic. A process
is defined through this intervention which leaves room for innovation in using
different materials and plug-ins over this framework to fit with desired functions.
