As shown in the Trumpf Gatehouse, the triangulated honeycomb lattice structure offers a great cantilever due to its strong structural properties. The structure is highly flexible and like the Fertile Market by X-Tu and the Metropol Parasol by Mayer it allows for spaces to be easily carved out of the structure while still being stable. The resulting carved spaces create a multi faceted, cave-like, underside. This experience on the underside is in response to the experience of being next to the bayou on the site.
The bayou is at a considerable lower elevation where one is taken to a very natural environment with its overgrown trees in comparison to the more urban, busy surface in combination with the exposed structural components of the underside of the San Felipe bridge. The sunken ground, the canopies of the large trees, and the presence of the bridge overhead, the site creates a unique environment that is separate from the rest of its surroundings. The boathouse would seek to emphasize this contrast by capturing this sunken environment and producing a different visual form with its starkly contrasting underside.
At first glance, the boathouse would only present its flat top when viewing from the street. However, entering in, one would descend into the boathouse revealing its geometric, carved underside. This formal contrast would contribute to the atmosphere of the bayou.
