The Manifesto du memoir is a residential project derived for the client and his partner to host his and their memories, as the client was originated from a foreign country living in NYC made home a memory rather than any physical structure. As a jewelry and art collector the client shows interest in the past, in the idea of time and in memory. Memory as in an atmosphere without specific past but the emotion and feeling, such as the impressionist paintings, where the objects and forms have no meaning than part of a impression. Therefore the challenge lies in defining memory and creating a form for it.
But to reach memory, or to remember, there are different approaches. Some are more curated, which comes with objects while some are more atmospheric and are experienced unexpectedly.
The space is thus organized into the two parts, one for the curated memory and one for the atmospheric memory. The curated area is dominated by the rigid grid frame shelves with display of the collections, it is also where the mother’s bedroom is because like his collections, it is what de vera valued the most and would want to present the best of him in front.
Moreover, the idea of memory and the surrealist’s definition of memory is experienced through various moments in the space, such as the isolation path and the outer bound of the display room. Using unfamiliar heights to reach a a sense of embracement, I see it as moments of peace and comfort that allow one to meditate alone freely.
The space is organized in layers and changing height of partitions, it is not intended to be understood immediately, but to unfolds as viewers walks through each space and reveals it self slowing. over time, the unfolding and revealing became part of the memory for the house and for the clients.
