Echelon Studios

The vision for Echelon Studios is to reinvent the form of media and entertainment studios through a campus that integrates the best of technology and creative resources with the legacy of Hollywood’s creativity and production needs.

Located among the beloved movie studio lots of Los Angeles, the 600,000 sq. ft. production hub fuses state-of-the-art soundstage production facilities and working studio lots with ample digital production and creative office space to meet the demands of content creators. The campus features two six-story creative office towers flanking the production studios, stitched together by an elevated campus and bungalow village of executive and creative suites.

Echelon Studios inverts the typical Hollywood production lot by allowing the studios to stack vertically and the offices to open to the outdoors, maximizing creative space across a dense city block. This site will feature four soundstages, one flex stage, production studios, retail, and creative offices with a more thoughtful, modern workflow.

The project creates a compelling and climate-adaptive environment that responds to its context. Smaller villa-like forms create an intimate scale that responds to the adjacent residential neighborhood. Along this façade, the bungalows sit above the basecamp, and at the street level, the landscape creates a small linear park as an amenity to the neighbors and street.

In an urbanistic manner, we treated each streetscape and adjacent façade differently, based on optimizing the performance relative to its environmental orientation.

The western and eastern façades achieve significant exterior shade from the porches and setback of the glass, whereas the north-facing façade opens to the views of the mountains and all of Hollywood. Active commercial tenant spaces at the corners provide access to outdoor seating, front doors to the office buildings, and ground-level retail to engage the public along the street.

The design offers views of the mountains, provides outdoor covered workspaces, and ensures the visitor is immersed in the landscape as they move through the campus. The circulation protects the site through distinct controlled public and private access points, while gardens support a modern work style with an indoor-outdoor connection. The office buildings offer robust private outdoor workspaces, providing shade and boosting energy efficiency.

The project addresses the needs of the industry, from technical to social to workflows and security and privacy. Our synergistic approach resonates with our clients, resolving such concerns by fulfilling the relationships between them into a meaningful, functional space.

With an elevated campus and a bungalow village that share unobstructed views of the Hollywood Hills, Echelon Studios meets the evolving demands of content creators across all creative industries while also providing engaging amenities at the street level for its surrounding communities.
