Distilling the Urban Fabric: A Building of the City

Located in Rome’s Piazza della Moretta along the historic Via Giulia, this project seeks to distill the city’s intrinsic urban qualities and synthesize them into an architectural and urban gesture along historic Via Giulia. Conceptually, the project is defined by the intersection of two “strade,” while the public spaces are informed by the existing ruins below the site. Together the massing and public spaces search for a balance between public and private while concurrently blurring the threshold between interior and exterior, new and old. A museum to Via Giulia and the extensive ruins below grade make up the program’s main component with residential and community programs to anchor the project to the surrounding neighborhood.
