The Monolith, Timber Pavilion

The Monolith is a proposal for Buildner's Timber Pavilion architecture competition and was awarded an honourable mention.

The Monolith relies on the design flexibility that cross-laminated and glue-laminated timber elements offer, it creates a dominant landmark that draws attention and offers the exhibition about timber construction as its focal point. Single curved glue-laminated truss is the backbone that carries the ribs over the exhibition area while the ribs, made of cross-laminated timber, make the whole structure sturdier. Located in parks or similar public spaces, it can sit on the sidelines of pedestrian paths or it can form a gate structure that spans that same path and directly interacts with people.

The Monolith may be a temporary timber pavilion, but its role in circular economy is multifold. Its central area is the focal point and concave-convex form can perfectly host a concert stage or a theater stage while the area above can be used to place a projection canvas for open-air cinemas in city parks. If a more drastic change is needed, every part can be disassembled and then reused on a different site for a completely new purpose.
