Ripples, The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial

Ripples is a proposal for Buildner's The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial (Edition 2) architecture competition and was awarded an honourable mention.

Located near Nevada desert testing sites, this memorial serves as a warning that symbolically shows the amount of lives lost in case of a nuclear strike on any moderately populated city. Starting from the ground zero the waves resonate into the distance and visitors can freely roam the troughs or climb the crests of the waves. The waves are made out of black formed concrete with cylindrical extrusions where each extrusion represents one human life that this dark wave carries away. The sheer amount of these extrusions symbolizes how incomprehensible the number of lives lost would be in such situation. Only a part of the memorial is visible at first, larger part is hidden under the sand and is only uncovered by the wind and time, the same way nuclear weapons have an instant but also a long spanning effect into the future.
