The proposed site for the Daegu Gosan Public Library is located on a major thoroughfare, bounded by a park on its main elevation, and by secondary roads and residential neighborhoods on its three other elevations.
By sloping the park up to the main entrance level and extending this slope into the proposed building, the Library’s connection to the Park and Main Street is strengthened.
The continuous slab slopes up to form the library’s public space and main collection, and down to accommodate the cultural & lifelong study center and offices.
As the needs of the library evolve, this continuous slab arrangement allows for flexibility as the programs could expand or retract as necessary.

Located at the heart of the library, the lounge is a major cultural space in continuation of the park’s outer public space, anchoring the library as a new public destination in the city.
A central bookshelf wall separates lounge from the main collection space, acting as a background and enclosure at the same time. The bookshelf wall extends down to the lower levels, separating the lecture space from the lifelong study center.

The functions of the Daegu Gosan Public Library--the cultural and lifelong study center, the offices, the public area, the children area and the main collection areas--are grouped into two halves, organized in a continuous revolving slab that connects all the levels together.
The volume (skin and slab) is lifted in the southeastern corner to create a secondary and car entries points. The secondary entrance provides access to the administration offices, the lifelong and cultural center, while the car ramp slopes down to the underground garage and maintenance spaces.

The skin of the library wraps around the serpentine slab in a faceted geometry, acting as a structural element and as daylight regulator.

The different faces are composed of a continuously-louvered structure that follow the skin’s geometry from the base to the roof, overlapped by a combination of flat planters and glass.
