Vertical Agora, Charter Middle School, Thesis

Due to fragile nature of the social environment of children during these specific ages (10-14), inspiration came from not other schools, rather great social and meeting space typologies. The greatest inspiration was the Greek Agora, which was technically a marketplace. An agora was located in every city and provided not only a means for people to exchange goods but provided a place for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, etc. Bringing that kind of feeling to an urban school environment meant that the typical ideas and layouts associated with Greek agoras had to be recontextualized. Agoras were long, rectangular, and horizontal; due to the spatial constraints of being in an urban area instead of being horizontal it had to become vertical and the path system that would be on the ground was exchanged for stairs. The vendors and stands that would originally be along the paths of the agora were changed into classrooms and public gathering spaces and other programs that follow a typical school.
