The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center lost several structures due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A small structure was planned to be designed and constructed with the help of community efforts and IIT Architecture students led by a professor. The design was created for versatility, as it was intended for the use of children’s arts and crafts activities. The structure was designed not only to withstand strong winds, but to remain in use throughout the year as well. A double facade detail was utilized to keep the heat from the sun on the skin of the building. The roof was done in a similar fashion, allowing the building to cool through the created air gap. The south end of the building is enclosed with a screened porch, which allows users to experience the outdoors while avoiding insects.
