The design intent of hex is a re-thinking of panelization and perforation with respect to digital fabrication. Instead of establishing a two-dimensional panel with set dimensions and constructed using either perforations or folds, hex begins with a three-dimensional unit which is then composed into panels. An ecotect analysis of the facade drives the grasshopper script which in turn determines the extrusion depth of the three-dimensional units. During the day hex is a sun shade for the building’s occupants. As an effort to reduce material waste and labor cost, each cut of stainless steel folds up into two hexagons.
