Willow Street Community Center

A studio project in the spring of '08 called for the design of a Community Center in the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans. The program called for exhibition spaces, a mediatheque, cafe, meeting rooms, and a library that could assist the neighborhood residents in rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.

This design focused on the idea of carving through the forces of wind patterns. The building was extruded from ground as a cube; by the forces of the southeast wind that generally flows across the site the entrances to the courtyard were determined. On the upper levels certain spaces within the "honeycomb" structure were extruded in or out to imply a connection with the neighborhood. The extrusions became study spaces or meeting spaces.
