Once a prominent local landmark, the Miami Marine Stadium had been left for demolition by neglect after it was damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In 2009 the City of Miami approached the University of Miami School of Architecture to generate a new master plan for the area, with the newly historically designated Marine Stadium as the focal point.
The concept of the master plan was to create a vision that both preserves and enhances the natural and cultural environment as it provides for education and public recreation for centuries to come. This was achieved through planning principals such as providing flexible open space on the eastern side for public recreational use, while keeping commercial and revenue generating boating facilities to the west. All aspects of the new construction will feature state of the art sustainability measures such as green parking, solar panels, and LEED Certified buildings.
