2222 N Alamo

This my Studio Project with Prof. William Dupont at UTSA for Fall 2010

2222 N. Alamo has a unique historical dynamics, which has transitioned from being farmland, once cultivated by water from the Acequia Madre to being the San Antonio’s first amusement park up to 1980. The 12.5 Acre plot will perceived as a part of the potentially larger future development along Broadway being precipitated in part by the New River North District. 2222 N. Alamo will once again become a new landmark with its high-density mixed used development, that consist of Grocery store, Office spaces, Retail spaces and residential apartments, small scale irrigation facility and other amenities.

Along the E. Joshephine and N.Alamo street the ground level accommodates retail space with green pockets, thus creating a softer & active street edge and a two storied residential
apartments above the retail spaces that blends with the surrounding neighborhood. A unique mixed use building on the North end of the site, which opens into the Broadway, will accommodate a Grocery store, Office space and an eleven storied high-density residential apartments the building will set back as it leaps to its heights to maintain its proportions with its surroundings.

A Uniquely designed Octagonal structural system which supports the two storied grocery, mimics the natural contour forms and also become the main pedestrian access to the grocery at the second level. As the building reaches its heights the slabs of the residential floors are rotated at an angle in order to protect from the east and west sun and also becomes outdoor space for the apartments. Integration of technology & tradition allows the building to take maximum advantage of daylighting systems and converts waste disposal from the small scale irrigation facility to other form of energy thus aiming for a carbon neutral design.
