Smart Code Growth for Post Katrina Pass Christian, Mississippi
Studio Spring 2009
Thesis:
To integrate into the urban fabric of east Pass Christian a multi family development that addresses
the transect documents while being responsible to the pedestrian, materials, building
and neighborhood scale. The goal would be to provide a catalyst for the regrowth and
densification of this section of Pass Christian.
Proposal:
To achieve the aforementioned goals a series of housing blocks will be composed on the
existing parcel, allowing for grain and cross-grain circulation, a primary goal of the master
plan. The blocks will be composed of modular units that address the ground plane in varying
ways depending on their location within the ABFE flood zone map.
Issues that will be explored and used in designing will be:
-The idea of a module, and it’s implication on building construction.
-Materials
-Creation of public, semi public and private space within and around the housing blocks..
-Integration of parking into the planning of the housing blocks such that is does not alienate
the housing blocks themselves.
-Framing of space and view sheds through the composition of the units.
-The derivation of form and inclusion of passive building systems drawn from the vernacular
of the region.
