In my fourth year of architectural study, I decided use my urban design experience for a high rise residential project. As recommendation from my professor Deb Ryan, I traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia to study high rise residential towers. Of primary concern to me was the difference in scale of my proposed project to the neighboring buildings of my site in Greensboro. Learning from Vancouver, I found that many towers include a 2-3 story plinth at the base of the buildings, that hug the street edge. This design moves allows the larger tower to rise from the center of the site and not alienate the pedestrian through scale disjunction.
