GINSBURG BUI DING

This building is an educational facility in the University of Southern California
campus.
The gross square footage is 55457.46 SQ-FT. It is a three-storey building
comprising classrooms, reading rooms, break rooms, administrative rooms
and a library.

Design and Net Zero Energy (NZE) Goals
1. Converting a steel structure building to a mass timber structure
2. Reduce the reliance on grid electricity by utilizing the renewable
electricity provided on-site (using solar panels).
3. Using passive systems to increase daylighting
4. Comply with LEED accreditation standards

Renewable Energy Strategy
As part of our analysis of energy use intensity (EUI), we utilized Covetool to
determine the EUI of the baseline design and the EUI of the proposed design.
The current model is done using Commercial - California Title 24 2019
energy code assumptions. The current design is better than the national
average and can be significantly improved by the higher performance of the envelope, HVAC, and more. The building load is driven by Equipment and Lighting. A primary difference between the baseline design and the proposed design is the integration of PV panels in both the facade and roof as a renewable energy strategy. Both designs utilize a hybrid variable refrigerant flow system with a ductless heat recovery system. In addition, operable windows were incorporated as a passive design strategy to ventilate the building in both baseline and proposed design. Using PVWATTS, we calculated the amount of energy produced per year.
