Building Blocks

In an effort to reconnect the historic French Quarter with the Mississippi River, this mixed-use multi-family building spans across the levee from its base on Decatur Street and reaches toward the riverfront. The standard module size uses the volume of a Creole Cottage housing typology, which is commonly used both as residential and retail space throughout Downtown New Orleans. These blocks are then woven together, drawing inspiration from the French Quarter where small buildings are intermixed and pieced together as housing, retail and restaurants, creating the neighborhoods unique fabric. The building extends towards the river in order to re-link and activate the space along the river and modules are removed to create accommodating gaps for the streetcar, floodwall and a public riverfront park.
